Read time - 2 mins Hey Reader! - Scotland's summer is still treating me well here. Broke out the paddle board in a local loch and found a giant patch of lily pads floating there. Hoping it's sunny wherever you are reading from. Let's get into the newsletter.
Don’t Keep Your Podcast Like a SecretThere is one mistake I see podcasters make when we work together that makes me jump for joy because we can fix it and start growing. Treating your podcast like a secret. I get it. Making a podcast requires a lot of vulnerability, so the act of hitting publish can make your palms sweat, and so the act of telling people about it is almost unthinkable (it gets easier). But podcasts grow with momentum. Those first few dozen listeners are the most important because they can provide early reviews and feedback and potentially start telling other people to listen. You need to bring those listeners to your podcast; it won’t just get discovered. Today, I’m going to share how to stop keeping your podcast like a secret so you can get those early listeners on board. Use Your Existing AssetsThe great thing about having a podcast for your business is that you can use all your existing communication channels to drive your early listeners. Website - Your podcast doesn’t have to be center stage on your website, but it needs its own landing page at least. I always check websites in my podcast audits because, all too often, the business podcast isn’t even mentioned, and it’s a gold mine of listeners being missed. Newsletter - Are you shouting out your podcast in your newsletter? It’s a list full of people who already want to hear from you. Give them another way to hear from you. Social Media - One Instagram post when the podcast launches isn’t enough. You have to keep on promoting yourself and shouting about your podcast. Slowly but surely people will start to move from yoru social media accounts to your podcast. Talk About It as a Conversation StarterEvery single person you meet and start chatting with is someone you can talk about your podcast with. I’m not saying you should scream it at strangers, although you do you, but when you’re talking to someone, and it comes around to “So what do you do?” You can say you have a podcast. It can seem much less salesy than saying you have a business, and you never know, the person you’re talking to might just want to listen. The more you practice and the more confident you become, the better you will be at bringing your podcast into conversations naturally. Having your ten-word description as a quick pitch lets you answer “So what’s your podcast about?” with ease and efficiency. You can then quickly gauge interest, or if the person is just being polite, it happens. But what also happens is new listeners start to drip in one by one. Your podcast starts to grow, but only if you stop treating it like a secret and start talking about it proudly. Community WinsTwo Geeks Talking passed 700,000 downloads and 16 years in the game
