Hey Reader! - My forehead looks like a tomato, which means summer is here. And right on cue, someone is cutting grass outside my window. Thankfully, this is written, not recorded! Also, a quick heads up that I'm taking on podcast coaching clients; if anyone's looking for help, you can book a free chat here.

Let someone else do the heavy lifting and get back to the fun of recording your podcast

Deconstructing Word of Mouth

There I was, sitting on the couch rewatching Bob’s Burgers when my phone beeped. It was my mum.

I opened up WhatsApp, knowing she’d been out to lunch with her wild swimming friends:

Mum: “You’ll never guess what!”

Me: “What?” I replied puzzled

Mum: “While we were at lunch today I started talking about your podcast. Turns out a couple of my friends already listen! And we were talking about it so much my other friends have downloaded Castbox so they can listen too!”

It was a good day.

Word of Mouth in Action

Conversations like these happen all the time about everything. I once complained to my brother about my hair thinning, and he talked about the shampoo he uses that is supposed to help. Word of mouth happened. I bought the shampoo. (It didn’t help if you were wondering...)

You will have these conversations all the time without even realising it, which is why they can happen around your podcast.

While my mum's conversation with her friends might seem like luck, it’s actually because of three concepts I’ve been teaching in this newsletter.

  • Spreading the word yourself
  • Going local with marketing
  • Focus on quality

The First Mouth Belongs to You

You have to tell people about your podcast. It goes from your mouth to theirs and can spread from there.

My mum listened in the first place because I’m always talking to her about the podcast. When we’re catching up, I almost always end up talking about what I’ve been recording or the research trips I’ve been taking.

And this isn’t just something I do with my mum, I do it to everyone. I was talking to a guy in the steam room about my podcast and he said he was going to listen on his way home. The same thing happened at a local market I attended. You can be your biggest fan and start these conversations.

Going Local

In a previous article, I discussed taking your marketing local. I explained how I reached out to my hometown ‘What’s Happening’ Facebook pages to promote my podcast launch.

That led to a few of my mum’s friends hearing about the podcast. Some gave it a listen, and others just read the name and logo. But it meant there was a familiarity, so when my mum brought up that her son was doing a podcast, people could easily join in with the conversation.

Sow the Seeds – Reap the Rewards

Combine these two principles with a pursuit of quality to make your podcast worth talking about, and you won’t be able to stop new listeners from finding your show.

While this is one example, there are 100 other ways with 100 different circumstances that it can happen. The common factor is you putting in the work to get the word out about your podcast so these conversations can happen.

One listener can turn into five listeners with a single conversation. That’s how a podcast grows.
